Mosaic Workshops & Private Tuition

Welcome to FH.Mosaics workshops. Friendly, hands on sessions, where you’ll learn timeless mosaic techniques in a relaxed and supportive setting. With over 30 years of experience, I’ve taught at the London School of Mosaics and Reed Harris, and other venues, guiding beginners and enthusiasts alike.

I also offer private tuition from my home studio, including a special introduction to Pietra Dura, the refined stone inlay technique I studied in Florence.

Create,Connect, Slow down

Step into the world of mosaic! Where creativity, craftsmanship, and peace come together.

FH.MOSAICS workshops are a space to explore, unwind, and make something meaningful with your own hands. Whether you’re looking for a new skill, a mindful moment, or simply a joyful way to spend time with others, mosaic making offers a unique and fulfilling experience.

Using beautiful materials like stone, glass, and ceramic, you’ll learn to shape small fragments into a cohesive whole which is a deeply satisfying process. No experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to slow down and enjoy the journey.

You can come alone, with a friend, or as a family; taking new skills, a finished piece, and a sense of pride and connection away with you! I experienced people’s first hand excitement when teaching volunteers during the London Bridge Mosaic Project, and saw how the volunteers gained confidence in their new skills and also felt more creative and relaxed throughout the creation of the piece.

Beyond the surface : Mastering mosaic techniques

This is an invitation to experienced makers, artists, and designers ready to explore mosaic as a refined and expressive art.

In these advanced sessions we move beyond the basics, diving into stone cutting, hand tools, and techniques inspired by Pietra Dura, the intricate Florentine art of stone inlay. You’ll work with stone, marble, granite and semi-precious stone, learning how to shape and set them with precision and artistic intent.

What is Pietra Dura?

Pietra Dura is a traditional mosaic technique that originated in Florence during the Renaissance. It involves carefully cutting and inlaying semi-precious stones like lapis lazuli, malachite, and jasper into marble or stone to create intricate, picture like designs.

Unlike mosaics made from small tiles, Pietra Dura uses shaped and polished stone pieces fitted together like a jigsaw, resulting in artworks that are rich in colour, detail, and texture.

Often seen in decorative panels, tabletops, and architectural details, Pietra Dura is a celebration of craftsmanship, patience, and natural beauty, an art form I continue to explore and share through my work and private tuition.
